The Fossil Collection
This body of work was inspired by the fossil remains at Kimmeridge Bay. I love the marks and textures left by the erosion of the sea. I spend a lot of time slowly walking the bay looking at the patterns and colours in the ledges that the sea has revealed since my last visit. Geology and palaeontology have always been a strong influence in my abstract paintings. I think that it must be the intricate structures and the earth colours of the pigments that attract me. I have a large collection in my studio of rocks, shells, fossils and frequently refer to them for inspiration.
In this collection I have tried to express the textured surfaces of the rock s and ledges. The sea washing over them and the light reflected on the emerging fossils.
Many of these small paintings are highly textured and sanded back revealing the layers beneath. Some contain textured fossil images that I have sculpted from acrylic texture pastes. My materials are archival and finished with UV protective varnish.

The first few images show detail of the texture and layers.
The best way to appreciate the beauty of these paintings is to visit the studio.
